Elaine Markley Student-Athlete Service Award

On March 17th, 2025, at the Corvallis High School Winter Sports Dessert Banquet, we proudly announced the launch of the Elaine Markley Student-Athlete Service Award. This award will be given out annually and serve as a continued celebration of Elaine’s historical and on-going contributions to the student-athletes in our community.

Dedicated Educator (31 years)

Physical Education teacher at Cheldelin Middle School for 31 years.

Track and Field Coach

Golden Apple Recipient (2000) 

 

Volunteer at Corvallis High School (started in early 2000's)

  • Helps daily in the lunchroom.

  • Chaperones at all school dances. 

  • Helps with the National Honor Society celebration.

  • Provides flower arrangements for staff and student celebrations. 

  • Teaches free flower arrangement classes for staff. 

  • Helps with coordination, purchase of gifts and gift wrapping for the Winter Smiles Program. 

  • Helps with the Benton County Career Fair. 

  • Coaches girls Flag Football.

 

Volunteer in athletics (over 40 hours most weeks)

  • Helping students get registered for sports.

  • Supporting student-athletes in performing their best in the classroom.

  • Managing the concession stands at CHS sporting events, shopping for food and supplies, managing volunteers, and tracking funds. 

  • Cleaning up of the concession stand after events. 

  • Organizing game day helpers.

  • Running the scoreboard for basketball and baseball. 

  • Returning cans and bottles picked up after events and donating the money to the Athletic Department. 

  • Organizing students to sing the National Anthem before games. 

  • Serving as the announcer at baseball games. 

  • Running the discus at home track meets. 

  • Providing water for officials. 

  • Supporting the Spartan Booster Club, helping to organize events, fundraise, and serving as a board member

  • Making Buddy Buttons on her own time to raise funds for the Spartan Booster Club. 

  • Helping with organization of fundraisers for teams. 

  • Updating the Sports Hotline daily. 

  • Driving students to appointments for physicals when needed. 

 

Volunteering in the broader Corvallis community

  • Helps AYSO every Saturday and is a board member

  • AYSO Volunteer of the Year (2002)

  • Organizes concessions and game day operations for the Corvallis American Legion baseball team. 

  • Volunteers with the American Legion baseball team; driving players to games, washing uniforms, and providing meals.

  • Lead host of the annual Mickey Riley Star Spangled Banner American Legion Baseball Tournament.

Scholarship Application Details​

​

Purpose:

This is a scholarship opportunity for senior, college-bound student-athletes at Corvallis High School who have demonstrated success in the classroom, on the court, and in the community.

​​

2025 Application Deadline: May 15th, 2025.

Decisions will be provided within 2 weeks of the deadline, no later than June 1st. 

​

Award Amount: $500​

​

Scholarship Criteria:

  • Corvallis High School senior student-athlete who is going on to a college, university, trade school, or other institute of higher education

  • 3.3 GPA or higher

  • Completed at least 60 hours of community service in the last 12 months​​

​

Application Materials: 

  • Response to the following essay prompts, to be entered directly into the application form:

    • What is the importance of service to both the individual(s) participating and those who are receiving the service? (~200 words) 

    • Reflect on how participating in sports has influenced your personal growth, values, and leadership skills. (~200 words) 

    • Explain your academic and career aspirations and how this scholarship will help you achieve them. (~200 words) 

  • High school transcript

  • Current photograph

  • Admission letter/other proof of enrollment or acceptance

  • 2 Letters of recommendation

    • These should should be someone who can comment on your commitment to excellence in academics, service, and sport. At least one of these letters must speak directly to your commitment to serving others.

We are always accepting donations to this scholarship fund to continue to provide this opportunity or expand the number and/or amount awarded each year.
